This famous portrait of the man in the bowler hat can be seen as a variant of the self-portrait "Le fils de l’Homme ", in which Magritte's face is hidden by an apple. The painter himself commented: "Every thing we see hides another, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There's an interest in what's hidden and what the visible doesn't show us."
