A dark street at night, against a background of blue sky illuminated by morning light: With the paradoxical combination of day and night, René Magritte wanted to create a shock effect on the viewer that would, in his own words, "surprise and enchant. I call this force poetry. If the disturbance caused by a work of art is poetry, this painting is pure poetry. The title also aims at this effect: it is enigmatic, it does not define the image represented, but leads the viewer away from reality.
