Description

"La Durée poignardée", painted in 1938, depicts a white marble fireplace from which a locomotive escapes, its steam rising up the chimney. On its console are two candlesticks and a clock reflected in a large mirror. This painting inspired art critics to elaborate complex explanations of its meaning, before René Magritte, twenty years after painting it, explained that it was simply an exploration of the concept of enigma.
